some republicans were upset that harry reid said he wasn't going to honor a hold. what you're seeing here from republicans is a play to make sure that they flex a little muscle so that the democrats understand that the president's agenda has to go through them and that's on guns, on immigration. i agree with david. i think this will get done but it's never great for a nominee to have to wait another week to hang out there and take shots from opposition. it's not a great place for them to be but i'm not worried that this is not going to get through but this is the flexing of the muscle by republicans in the senate for sure. >> okay. so hagel gets blocked at least for now. rand paul and others are threatening to block john brennan. susan rice didn't get to the nomination process. is this rocky road if that's how we want to describe it, david, does this hurt the president's credibility or at least his ability to get things done, a small distraction, should it become a smaller one? put it into the wider con tech in terms of what the white house want to be accomplishing

harry reid can't lead a senate to doing fiscally responsible things. >> or anything. >> i'm not sure i understand what you were saying. if you're indicating that the republicans should go out and say they support the sequester, think you were saying the same thing. that's political suicide for them. even though it may be the right thing what happens is once the sequester takes effect if there are layoffs and people rebel against it, republicans are solely owning that. they are responsible for that. >> it's the president's idea. the white house came up with it. >> the republicans are saying they want the sequester. >> the president threatened to veto. they said we want to undo part of the sequester. the president said, i will veto that if you do. he's completely changed his tune. he's flip-flopping all over the place. this is his sequester. he came up with with it, signed it into law and republicans are saying, remember, this whole sequester is from the 2011 -- this is two-year-old spending cuts. we need to cut spending. >> by the way, it's not going to hurt the economy and the countr

part of the answer is last week harry reid and speaker boehner met, i understand, and harry reid, the democratic leader in the senate, majority leader, said, look, let's postpone this for a year and literally said to john boehner, you can't let this moment go by. i don't think boehner wants to let it go by, but he took a real hit on the tax increases for the rich when they did the fiscal cliff negotiations. another one main this sequence. they won't give, at least at this point. it truly is government at its worst. >> so andrew ross sorkin, play this out for us. if they put this off, is anyone ever going to take washington seriously again, and what's at stake? >> does anybody take them seriously? >> 9% of americans do. >> the 9%. >> that's probably a fair issue. one, what does it do to the economy in the long term and short term? most economists now are saying, as bad as the defense industry believes it's going to be, as bad as you could argue it's going to be for some of the poorest people in this country, if you have the discussion we were having during the commercial break about kr

the fact that harry reid's senate and that harry reid himself has gotten in the way of a former really good budget chairman not passing a budget is shameful. and now you have the president saying, well, i'm against the sequester cuts. well, okay, great. what are you going to replace them with? i don't know. no specifics. they never give specifics. >> so i don't know, because i was working on my column and talking to a couple different people in the white house yesterday. and they were talking about the president's statement yesterday. and he is saying to republicans, come meet with him. anytime. they can come right now. and he will work on a deal. it can be a smaller deal if we can't make the sequestration deadline. and it can involve spending and revenue and a mix, and that they haven't taken their toys and walked away. they've offered $400 billion in health care cuts and other things. the republicans have other ideas, come on over to the white house. put them on the table. let's make a small deal. if we can't get to a big deal, he would like to get to a big deal. and he's invited the
